This even gets its own sub-story where it's explained with lots of details. The final arc revealed that Avan was playing dumb since his teen years, both to fool his enemies and to avoid awkward comparisons with his (vastly inferior) allies. This is also the reason Baran snapped and vowed to wipe out all humans. Humans are usually viewed in a positive light, but it's clear that Dai has been and will be rejected by a lot of humans for being half dragon knight and unnaturally strong.

Late in the story, Maam acts this way towards Popp inside Vearn Palace, as the result of her being worried about him (and Brokeena) possibly being dead, only to turn around to see him lazing around alongside Brokeena, alive and quite well — and Popp's words that rub her the wrong way don't help Maam ends up beating Popp up in reaction.Crocodine: You have a rather violent way of expressing your joy. This also overlaps with Calling Out for Not Calling, as Popp had left for over a year without sending any news home in the meantime. Steenue and the heroes accompanying Popp end up having to intervene to stop him from inflicting more injuries on Popp than he already has. After seeing Popp for the first time after Popp ran off, he really lets loose on Popp — violently (for starters, his initial reaction is to grab unto Popp, lift him up, and then slam him on the ground). Immediately after that, Merle begs Popp to show her real courage and say the name of the woman he loves. Popp freaks out and asks her why, which makes Leona finally lose it and reveal that Merle has been in love with him since ever. During the battle to gain entrance to Vearn's fortress, Shrinking Violet Merle takes a bullet for Popp.
